August 2, 2007 -- Chris Gregoire:

“On behalf of all Washingtonians, my thoughts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those who were killed in the Minnesota bridge collapse. I have contacted Governor Pawlenty to express our sympathy during this time and offer whatever help they may need.

“Safety is always my top priority with regard to our roads and bridges. While we do not know the cause of the collapse in Minnesota, this is a reminder to everyone in the country that infrastructure is important.

“Washington demands a regular inspection process for all 3,000 state bridges. I have asked that the Department of Transportation provide me and legislative transportation leaders with a report outlining the most recent inspections conducted on our bridges and the results of those inspections.

“Again, our thoughts are with those in Minnesota who lost loved ones. Our priority is to ensure the safety and maintenance of infrastructure in our state.”
