Utah Governor Calls for Comprehensive Review of Utah Bridges

Salt Lake City - Utah Governor Jon Huntsman has directed the Utah Department of Transportation to begin a comprehensive review of Utah bridges in light of the tragic situation in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

"The well-being of all Utahns is my top priority," Governor Huntsman said. "I hope all citizens will feel confident that the roads and bridges in Utah are safe for travel and well-maintained."

The review will begin immediately, focusing on Utah's 200 high priority bridges, looking at integrity of the bridges, structure and composition of the bridge. There is a full review of all of Utah's 2,700 bridges every two years. An outside contractor will be hired to verify the data collected.

The Federal Highway Administration has requested a review of all bridges similar to that which collapsed Wednesday in Minnesota. There are no bridges of that design in Utah.

"The safety of our bridge system is of the utmost importance to the department," UDOT Executive Director John Njord said. "Per the Governor's request, we will immediately begin a comprehensive look at our current bridge inspection data and do a full review of our highest priority bridges throughout the state."
