MLB: Detroit Tigers Hold Off Boston Red Sox, 6-5
09 July 2007 -- The Detroit Tigers held off Boston, 6-5, to complete a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox, heading into Major League Baseball's All-Star break.
Gary Sheffield hit one of three home runs Sunday off Boston pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, and also had two doubles off the Japanese star.
In another American League contest, the New York Yankees trounced the Los Angeles Angels, 12-0. Alex Rodriguez hit his majors' leading 30th homer.
Toronto's Alex Rios drove in the only run of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Blue Jays a victory over the Cleveland Indians. The Chicago White Sox scored five times in the third inning to defeat the Minnesota Twins, 6-3. The Kansas City Royals thumped the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 12-4. The Texas Rangers eked out a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. And the Seattle Mariners downed the Oakland Athletics, 7-3.
In the National League, Cincinnati's Scott Hatteberg drove in the game-ending run with two outs in the 11th inning, giving the Reds a 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The St. Louis Cardinals crushed the San Francisco Giants, 7-0. The Pittsburgh Pirates got by the Chicago Cubs, 6-2. The Washington Nationals scored six runs in the sixth inning to rally past the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-2. The Houston Astros tripped up the New York Mets, 8-3. The Philadelphia Phillies doubled the Colorado Rockies, 8-4. The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Florida Marlins, 9-3. And the Atlanta Braves edged the San Diego Padres, 5-4.
The National League division leaders at the three-day All-Star break are the Mets, Brewers and Padres, while the Dodgers are tops in the wildcard playoff race.
The American League division leaders are the Red Sox, Tigers and Angels, with the Indians leading in the wildcard spot.
The baseball season is a little more than halfway complete.
