Ted Kennedy: Kennedy On Supreme Court Decision
May 29, 2007 -- WASHINGTON, D.C — Today, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, released the following statement in response to the decision by the Supreme Court in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
“Today’s Supreme Court decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. strikes at the heart of the civil rights laws requiring equal pay for equal work. Workers will have to challenge pay discrimination within a limited time period— no matter how long the discrimination continues. Many victims of pay discrimination who didn’t immediately realize they were being paid less than others will have no remedy, even though the discrimination continues with every paycheck. With women earning only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men, the nation needs strong laws against pay discrimination. This is not what Congress intended when we passed the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1991, and we need to restore full protection against wage discrimination.”
