Senators Levin, McCain Request Review of Body Armor Systems
May 22, 2007 -- WASHINGTON – Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich) and John McCain (R-Ariz.), the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today asked Defense Secretary Robert Gates for a comprehensive review of individual body armor systems.
“Recent press reports raise questions about the fairness and reliability of Army tests of commercially available body armor and whether it fails, meets, or exceeds the military’s ballistic protection requirements,” the senators wrote. “We are convinced that the Department of Defense must definitively and officially determine the facts regarding the protective qualities of the body armor we are currently providing our troops and that of any other commercially available comparable and competing system.”
