PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds is requesting a presidential disaster declaration for public assistance in the 22 counties hardest hit by the May 4-5 storms and subsequent flooding.

The request is part of the process for receiving federal disaster funds. If the President agrees to the declaration, up to 75% of the eligible costs to repair public infrastructure like roads, bridges, and sewer systems could be reimbursed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The state will cover the other 25% of the cost.

“The storms that roared through earlier this month caused a significant amount of damage to personal and public property. We’ve already requested help from FEMA for people who suffered home and property damage. Now we’re looking for assistance in getting our communities put back together,” said Governor Mike Rounds.

The preliminary damage report done by the South Dakota Office of Emergency Management, FEMA, and local officials showsmore than five-million dollars in estimateddamage to public infrastructure in Aurora, Beadle, Brown, Brule, Bon Homme, Buffalo, Clark, Day, Hanson, Hutchinson, Jackson, Jerauld, Kingsbury, Lake, Marshall, McCook, Miner, Roberts, Sanborn, Spink, Tripp and Yankton counties.

There is no timeline as to when the White House will either accept or deny the declaration request.
