May 11, 2007 -- HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania Governor Rendell has ordered that all U.S. and Pennsylvania flags at state facilities throughout the commonwealth be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, May 15, in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

“On this day, we pay tribute to the local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who bravely serve the public and play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of our citizens,” Governor Rendell said. “We honor them for their character, leadership and courage.”

Peace Officers Memorial Day was set by joint resolution and approved Oct. 1, 1962. As amended, (76 Stat. 676), Congress has authorized and requested the president to designate May 15 of each year as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" and, by Public Law 103-322, as amended, (36 U.S.C. 136), has directed that the flag be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day.
