May 7, 2007 -- "It was recently reported that Environmental Measurements Laboratory, a federal radiological research and development facility in New York City, is closing. This news is deeply disturbing due to the loss of highly skilled jobs and for the serious implications on homeland security and public safety.

While the lab - whose annual budget is less than $10 million - has been plagued by federal funding cuts over the years, it remained one of New York State's primary federal partners in radiologic science and the integration of that science into our counter-terrorism efforts. President Bush and Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff should reconsider this closure and commit the funding necessary to allow this important facility to remain open."
