NHL Playoffs: Senators Eliminate Devils

06 May 2007 -- In the National Hockey League playoffs, the Ottawa Senators beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 to move into the Eastern Conference finals for only the second time in team history.

The visiting Senators erased an early one-goal deficit with tallies from Antoine Vermette, Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson in the second period Saturday.

Ottawa won the best-of-seven series four games to one. The Sens next face the winner of the other semifinal series between the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers for the Eastern Conference title.

Buffalo leads three games to two, with game six Sunday in New York.

In Western action, the Detroit Red Wings beat the San Jose Sharks 4-1 Saturday to take a three-games-to-two lead in their semifinal series. Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg led the Red Wings with a goal and two assists each.

Detroit can close out the series Monday in San Jose.

The Western and Eastern Conference champions will play in the NHL finals for the league championship and the prestigious Stanley Cup trophy. The name of each member of the winning team is engraved on the Cup each year.
