'Street Sense' Wins Kentucky Derby
06 May 2007 -- "Street Sense" has made an amazing charge from 19th place to win the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, the first jewel in horse racing's Triple Crown.
After falling behind early Saturday, jockey Calvin Borel guided "Street Sense" back from next-to-last in the 20-horse field to win the race in two minutes and two seconds. "Hard Spun" was second, two lengths back, while early favorite "Curlin" finished third.
"Street Sense" is the first two-year-old to win the race of mainly three-year-olds since Spectacular Bid accomplished the feat in 1979.
The crowd of 156,000 fans, the third largest in Derby history, was joined by Queen Elizabeth of Britain as she made her first appearance at Churchill Downs.
The crowd also saw a moving tribute to 2006 winner "Barbaro." The horse had to be euthanized nearly four months ago after a struggle to recover from the shattered leg he suffered running in the Preakness Stakes two weeks after his Derby victory.
