Arizona Sec. of State Releases Latest Statewide Voter Registration Figures
May 2, 2007 -- PHOENIX -- Arizona Secretary of State Jan Brewer has released the voter registration figures for the State of Arizona for the second quarter of 2007. The statewide voter registration total has increased to 2,609,585 up 15,188 since the first quarter.
There are 1,019,220 registered Republicans, a decrease of 202, since January. Registered Democrats total 858,988, a decrease of 750 and registered Libertarians number 18,612, a decrease of 148 registered voters during that same period.
Arizonans registered as Independents or as members of unrecognized parties are grouped together in the “other” category on the voter registration figures. The latest total of voters in that group is 712,765, an increase of 16,288 since the first quarter of 2007.
“I am pleased to see the continuing efforts to clean up the voter rolls by the County Recorders in ensuring that our voter registration data is up to date and complete,” stated Secretary of State Brewer. Secretary Brewer added, “As we get closer to the Presidential Preference Elections in 2008 where only those voters registered with a specific political party can participate, I have no doubt that we will see party registrations begin to significantly climb.”
The Census 2000 data announced by the Arizona Department of Economic Security reports the state’s voting age population to be 3,763,685. Using that figure, 69 percent of eligible Arizonans are registered to vote. According to the Federal Election Commission, the actual number of eligible voters, those that are legally entitled to vote, will always be less than the voting age population because of the inclusion of resident aliens (both legal and illegal), as well as convicted felons who have not yet had their voting rights restored under the various State laws, persons adjudicated incapacitated by a court of law, or those persons otherwise ineligible to vote.
A copy of the voter registration figures by county is included with this press release. Copies are available at the Secretary of State’s office on the 7th floor of the State Capitol, or by calling the Election Services Division at 602-542-8683 or 1-877-THE VOTE (1-877-843-8683), or by visiting the Secretary of State’s Web page at www.azsos.gov.
