Connecticut Attorney General Calls On NRC To Expand Airplane Crash Assessments To Existing Nuclear Reactors
April 24, 2007 -- "The NRC should immediately extend this common sense requirement to Indian Point and other existing reactors, ordering them to assess their ability to withstand a large airplane crash. I have advocated this requirement for years. Requiring future reactors to evaluate their vulnerability to air attack - while welcome - does nothing to address the real and terrifying threat of a terror attack from the skies.
"Al Qaeda has expressed interest in attacking the nation's nuclear plants, but the NRC continues to regrettably ignore this clear and present danger. At best, the commission's action will have no impact for years, while continuing to leave Indian Point and the nation's other nuclear facilities dangerously vulnerable. The time for talk is past. NRC action is necessary now to protect nuclear power plants from potentially catastrophic air attacks."
