Governor, ANR Secretary and USDA to Highlight Regional Composting Effort

April 23, 2007 -- Montpelier, Vt. – Vermont Governor Jim Douglas and Natural Resources Secretary George Crombie on Tuesday will continue the state’s celebration of Earth Week with the Northern Vermont Composting Partnership, a new regional composting effort aimed at reducing food scraps in the state’s waste stream.

The partnership – a collaboration of The Highfields Institute, Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District, the Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District and the Town of Greensboro – is the latest effort to convince Vermont schools and businesses to keep their food scraps out of the state’s landfills.

“Schools, businesses and residents can turn their food scraps into an economically valuable resource – compost – rather than another pile of waste in the landfill,” Gov. Douglas said. “Projects like the Northern Vermont Composting Partnership are a perfect example of what can happen when the public and private sectors can join together to protect the environment and create economic opportunity.”

The partnership was formed with the help of a $100,000 United States Department of Agriculture grant.

In all, more than a dozen businesses and seven schools are participating in the program, diverting an estimated 100 to 200 tons of food waste, which will be turned into about 350 yards of compost. As an incentive, participating schools and businesses are eligible for free hauling of food scraps, as well as reduced or eliminated landfill tipping fees.

“This is one very significant way for us to reduce our waste stream,” Sec. Crombie said. “It is imperative that we look for every possible way to radically reduce the amount of waste we as a society produce, until we get to zero. It won’t happen quickly, but efforts like the Northern Partnership take us toward that point.”

The partnership will demonstrate its work beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday at The Highfields Institute’s West Hill Farm compost demonstration site at 2362 West Hill Road in Hardwick.
